Christine Avanti: the difference between a nutritionist and a dietician
People frequently ask me the difference between a nutritionist and a registered dietician. What does a nutritionist do? What does a registered dietician do? What schooling is required for each one? The difference between a nutritionist and a dietician is explained here.

Often I am asked if I am a registered dietician (RD). The answer is no I am not. I am a certified nutritionist. What does that mean? To many people it is not clear. First I will clarify the schooling level that is indicated by the title. Then I will explain what it is that I do and what sets me apart from everybody else in my profession.

What is the difference between an RD and a nutritionist?

Registered dieticians receive their official RD credential from the American Dietetic Association after having completed an undergraduate degree from a select list, an exam, and an accredited supervised internship - usually in a medical facility such as a hospital or clinic. Thus an RD is qualified to design meals for medical patients. By contrast a nutritionist can obtain a certification through a number of organizations, none of which are centrally governed (as done for RDs by the ADA). Thus a nutritionist stands largely on their own merit. A nutritionist might obtain a professionally recognized designation from various accredited colleges. Most nutritionists come from a background of practical experience - such as athletes, fitness competitors, personal trainers, fitness models or other pursuits requiring great practical knowledge of health and nutrition. While not qualified to treat medical conditions, a nutritionist usually draws upon tremendous practical experience in advising people to achieve weight-loss, sports performance, and optimum health.

Should I seek a registered dietician or a nutritionist?

If you are suffering from a disease state, you should seek medical care from a doctor. A doctor might use an RD to assist in your treatment. If you are healthy and your goal is to lose weight, improve your performance or optimize your health, you can talk to an RD as well but you should be sure they are a specialist in your need. A nutritionist does not treat medical conditions but a qualified nutritionist with a specialty in your need can really help you. My specialty is weight-loss in the real lives of people in the real world. I help people navigate their jobs, their families, their commutes, and their travels and still lose weight.

What sets you apart from other nutritionists?

People come to me for help getting their weight and their lives under control. They wouldn't come if it was easy. Food is a very emotional subject for all of us. Most of us connect food specifically with pleasure, happiness, and good times with families. Unfortunately, too much of the wrong food and you are going to be six feet under before your family grows up and gives you grandkids. Weight-loss and nutrition is not just a matter of learning the information - it is a matter of the heart more than anything. I succeed where others fail because of my technical knowledge but also because of my understanding and compassion for my clients. Make no mistake, I am very nice but I am also very tough if necessary. I am frequently invited to appear on national television to talk about nutrition. But that would end quickly if I wasn't a passionate researcher, a competent resource, and a compassionate human being. My clients and the media know they can have confidence in me.
