Christine Avanti: the difference between a diet and a nutrition plan
People frequently ask me the difference between a diet and a nutrition plan. The word "diet" is so ingrained in our vocabulary that we almost always equate losing weight with starvation. There is a big difference between losing weight on a diet and losing weight on a nutrition plan. What is the difference? Why is there a new diet every week? Why do they never work? Read here to find out.

Often in conversation people use the word diet. They ask me how my diet works or what you can eat on my diet. Or they try to summarize my nutrition plans by saying "less carbs" or "less fats" or "less sugar." These two-word magic solutions are what most of us still wishfully seek. These are the essence of a diet: less of something. Deprivation of one or more nutrients. A diet is less intake - usually of one specific nutrient such as carbs. Because of the way we think, this leads to books, foods, products, magazines, and entire cultures that form around the concept of reducing the one enemy nutrient. Most people simplify the concept and try to eliminate the enemy nutrient completely. When you study nutrition, you realize the body doesn't respond to this treatment - at least not in the long term. This is because the body needs a balance of nutrients to meet its nutritional requirements. I never use the word "diet" when I talk about nutrition. Instead I say "eating plan" or "nutrition plan" because you aren't starving or depriving yourself- you are feeding yourself.

If something makes you fat, why not just eliminate it from your diet?

First of all, let's call it a nutrition plan rather than a diet. If carbs have been proven scientifically to make you fat, you still can't just eliminate them because they are needed in the body. Not only are they needed but they are needed to fuel your brain and you need to refuel again every four hours. Eliminating them might burn a little fat but will also cause your metabolism to slow and your own lean tissue (muscle) to be consumed along with a host of other unwanted effects. Then after a day or two, the body will literally drag itself into the kitchen at midnight to replenish the missing nutrient - the late night binge. Ultimately the negative effects of eliminating a specific nutrient will defeat the original purpose. The only long-term solution to weight loss is to have a smart nutrition plan that includes all the nutrients needed by the body. A diet is deprivation and will starve you. A nutrition plan feeds you.

What if I hate going on a diet?

Good. Don't ever go on another diet. It will never work in the long term. Don't ever skip meals and never replace meals with skimpy "diet food" like carrots and celery. Instead, eat according to a healthy nutrition plan. A healthy nutrition plan includes full, satisfying meals and no hunger or starvation. Just like a diet, it isn't easy but believe me it is better to eat more often and be full than it is to try and starve yourself. On a healthy nutrition plan you are never hungry, you have better energy, and you are liberated from the constant stress of the whole "diet" concept. It is truly transformational to the lives of all my clients.

What sets you apart from other nutritionists?

People come to me for help getting their weight and their lives under control. They wouldn't come if it was easy. Food is a very emotional subject for all of us. Most of us connect food specifically with pleasure, happiness, and good times with families. Unfortunately, too much of the wrong food and you are going to be six feet under before your family grows up and gives you grandkids. Weight-loss and nutrition is not just a matter of learning the information - it is a matter of the heart more than anything. I succeed where others fail because of my technical knowledge but also because of my understanding and compassion for my clients. Make no mistake, I am very nice but I am also very tough if necessary. I am frequently invited to appear on national television to talk about nutrition. But that would end quickly if I wasn't a passionate researcher, a competent resource, and a compassionate human being. My clients and the media know they can have confidence in me.
